Ever since I put my fingers on my first game controller, I fell in love with video games; and the adrenaline, challenge and laughter that came with playing them. Even now, as a high school student, video games play a part in my life. Although I can only manage to squeeze in a couple hours a week of gaming, it’s still something that I look forward to during the week, and is something I love to do to relax.
But this industry is rapidly changing. The graphics are getting much more realistic, and the Esports industry is getting so popular, that gamers are winning millions of earnings from playing these highly competitive games. But the one thing I wanted to talk about today is of course AI. AI is playing a huge role in popular games today, with many roles ranging from NPC’s to helping to create the game itself.
Why don’t we just jump right in and see for ourselves!
Although there are many different uses of AI in the gaming world, I am only going to be breaking down two uses which I think are the most important ones. Firstly, I am going to talk about AI and NPC’s. NPC’s are basically the bots in the game, which are supposed to act as human-like as possible, so that they resemble another player. The term NPC actually stands for a Non-Playabale-Character. AI is helping these NPC’s become more realistic and advanced by analysing the game environment, players, quests, difficulty level, and etc. On top of that AI is helping with giving NPCs more realistic emotions, for when they interact with players in games. The final thing that I think is really cool is collaborative NPC’s.
In an online multiplayer game such as Fortnite, players have to work together in squads to eliminate the other teams. AI has made it possible so that an entire team could be NPC’s, but they will still know how to work together efficiently. So for real players such as you and me, it will seem as though we are fighting a real team, even if they are just bots.
Secondly, I wanted to talk about AI and the fact that it can not only assist in the creation of video games, but can also create a game all by themself(with some limitations). After doing some research and testing it out myself, I can confirm that ChatGBT can in fact code you a video game. There are many factors to keep in mind when asking ChatGBT to make you a game. But the main things to remember are:
- Keep it simple
ChatGBT only knows how to code simple games such as Pac Man or Tetris. When asking it to code something more complicated such as Pokemon or Tetris, it won’t give you any code, but a list of instructions and suggestions instead, so that you can make your own game.
- You still need to run the game locally
Although ChatGBT will give you the code(Python, Java, etc.), you won’t
actually be able to play the game within ChatGBT itself. You’ll still need to
install python and run the code from there.
