Recently a new futuristic tool has taken the world by storm. While it first started as a tool that had people aweing in amazement, it suddenly became a student’s best friend, and a teacher’s worst enemy.
The tool that I am talking about is of course none other than Chat-GBT. Across the globe, millions of people have been using this tool for the last couple of months. So what exactly makes Chat-GBT so useful? Well, imagine you had someone that could do almost anything you ask it to. That’s exactly what Chat-GPT is. All you have to do is type a question with requirements and restrictions, and there you have it. A nice text written by an AI, but almost indistinguishable from a human’s writing. For example, say you have to write a 250 word essay about why Climate Change is bad. Just type in the question: “Write a 250 word essay about why climate change is bad”. And done! Chat-GBT will do exactly as asked!
But now comes the real question. Is Chat-GBT a good thing for our society? Well, today I’m going to state a couple arguments that I’ve thought of, both the good and the bad.
Firstly, Chat-GBT isn’t only for writing school essays. The past couple of weeks, I have been really exploring how powerful the AI really is, and what it’s capable of. One of the most useful uses that I have discovered is writing code. There are many different things that the engine can do for programmers. As a programmer, I would definitely use this tool, for it is a huge time-saver. Firstly, you can ask it to translate a piece of code from one language to another. Pretty cool. But it gets better. Have you ever been writing some code, but for some reason the code won’t run and keeps giving you error codes that you don’t understand? Well, your best-friend Chat-GBT can definitely help you out! Describe your code and problem, and it will give you insanely insightful feedback and possible solutions! But wait. I saved the best for last! Chat-GBT can literally just write the entire code for you! Describe what you want, and boom! However, even if there are no syntax errors, the logic can still be flawed, so make sure to double check the code!
That was really the only big pro of Chat-GBT that I could find. Although it can help with other tasks such as writing emails and writing essays, let me explain why the latter isn’t such a great thing after all.
Firstly, this tool is going to have a big effect on the school system, and will change the way teachers test and evaluate a student’s writing capability. In the past, they could’ve just assigned an essay to be written, and let the students write. But now, because of Chat-GBT, it’s so easy for a student to cheat, and a teacher won’t be able to fairly grade them.
Because of this tool, students can get very lazy, and turn to chat-gbt before even trying to do it themselves. This can make people very dependent on a tool. Let’s say Student X uses Chat-GBT all throughout high-school, and get into a great University. But all of a sudden, Chat-GBT is shut down for unknown reasons, and Student X has to do the assignments themselves! They won’t have had enough practice, and would probably fail.
So in conclusion, Chat-GBT is a bit of a two-face. It can be helpful, but there’s a fine line between helping and depending on someone or something. So at the end of the day, in my opinion, Chat-GBT is like all other tools, and the effect on students on how they use it.
